Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) Early Literacy for Children (ELC) Age birth Through Three Practice Exam

Routines support literacy development in early childhood primarily by reinforcing communication skills through predictable interactions. Consistent routines help create a familiar environment where children can anticipate what comes next, which is crucial for language learning. When children engage in regular activities like storytime, mealtime conversations, or morning greetings, they are provided with opportunities to practice language and communication in a safe setting. These predictable interactions not only enhance vocabulary but also promote understanding of language structure and social skills as children learn to express their thoughts and respond to others.

In a routine, children can also develop listening skills, turn-taking in conversations, and the ability to follow and understand simple instructions. This foundational understanding of language contributes significantly to their literacy skills as they grow. By embedding language opportunities into routines, caregivers and educators reinforce the value of communication and encourage children to explore language in a supportive context.
